✦ STEP 2: TORAH OF LIFE VS. CHURCH LEGALISM ✦
The Great Reversal
“Religion tells you the Law is a curse to be escaped. Scripture teaches that the Torah is a fence of light that keeps you from walking off the cliff.”
1. The Greek Word Trap: “Nomos” vs. “Torah”
The modern church claims the “Law” is dead because English translations use the cold Latin word Lex or Greek word Nomos (civil code, regulation, punishment).
In Hebrew, the word is Torah (תּוֹרָה):
- Root: Yarah (יָרָה) — To shoot an arrow straight at a target; to point out the correct direction.
- Meaning: Loving instruction, fatherly teaching, guidance of light.
- In Proverbs (Mishle) 6:23:
“For the commandment is a lamp; and the Torah is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life.”

2. What Was Actually “Nailed to the Stake”?
Pastors frequently quote Colossians 2:14 to claim that the 10 Commandments and the Torah were nailed to the cross:
“Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to His cross [stake]…”
The Forensic Examination:
- The Greek phrase used by Sha’ul is cheirographon tois dogmasin (χειρόγραφον τοῖς δόγμασιν).
- In ancient Roman and Jewish court jurisprudence, a cheirographon was a handwritten debt certificate or criminal record of charges signed by an accused debtor or criminal acknowledging their guilt.
- The Torah is not against us: The Torah is holy, just, and good (Romans 7:12).
- Our sins are what was against us: The death penalty hanging over our heads for breaking the Torah was nailed to the stake when Yahusha spilled His blood.
- The Analogy: When a judge pardons a thief, he tears up the speeding ticket / criminal record of charges. He does not abolish the speed limit or legalize burglary!
3. Yahusha’s Own Direct Witness on the Torah
In His famous Mount of Beatitudes address (Mattithyahu 5:17–19), Yahusha settled this debate forever:
“Think not that I am come to destroy the Torah, or the Prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.
For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one yod or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the Torah, till all be fulfilled.
Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”
The Child Test:
- Has heaven and earth passed away yet? No, we are standing on earth right now.
- Therefore, has any part of the Torah passed away? Not a single letter or stroke.
4. The Warning of Lawlessness (Anomia)
Yahusha warned that at the final judgment, religious people who performed miracles in a false name while rejecting the Torah will be turned away:
Mattithyahu 7:22–23:
“Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name? and in your name have cast out devils? and in your name done many wonderful works?
And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work lawlessness [Greek: Anomia — living without the Torah].”
4. Courtroom Cross-Examination (Oral Defense Q&A)
Use these questions and answers to teach your family or defend the truth when questioned:
Question 1: “What does Colossians 2:14 actually mean when it speaks of ‘blotting out the handwriting of ordinances’?”
- The Defense:
- The Greek phrase is Cheirographon tois dogmasin, which refers in Greco-Roman contract law to a signed debtor’s note (an I.O.U. or certificate of indebtedness).
- Because the penalty of sin is death (Romans 6:23), every human carried a certificate of debt declaring our guilt and condemnation.
- Yahusha did not nail the holy commandments of His Father to the execution stake; He nailed our death warrant (the penalty certificate of our debt) to the stake, cancelling our debt!
Question 2: “Doesn’t Shaul (Paul) teach against the Law in Galatians?”
- The Defense:
- In 2 Kefa (Peter) 3:15–16, the Apostle Kefa (Peter) explicitly warns that Shaul (Paul)‘s epistles contain things hard to be understood, which the unlearned and unstable twist to their own destruction, promoting lawlessness.
- Shaul (Paul) was battling the heresy that Gentiles had to be physically circumcised by Pharisaic tradition to earn salvation (legalism).
- Shaul (Paul) himself concluded in Romans 3:31: “Do we then make void the law through faith? Elohim forbid: yea, we establish the law!”
Question 3: “What is the true biblical definition of Sin?”
- The Defense:
- Scripture gives only one explicit legal definition of sin in the entire Bible:
- 1 John (Yohanan) 3:4: “Whosoever commits sin transgresses also the law: FOR SIN IS THE TRANSGRESSION OF THE LAW (Torah)!”
- If the Torah was abolished, then sin no longer exists, which means we would have no need for a Savior! The Law must stand for sin to be identified.
