✦ AHARON (AARON) — אַהֲרֹן ✦

The First High Priest of Yisra’ĕl, Bearer of the Urim & Thummim, and Guardian of the Budded Almond Rod

The Anointing of the Priesthood

“Speak light, not sorcery.” — “Return to the Original Witness.”
“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; as the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there Yahuah commanded the blessing, even life forevermore.”
— Tehillim (Psalms) 133:1–3

🧭 Executive Dossier: The Anointed High Priest

Aharon (אַהֲרֹן) was the elder brother of Mosheh by three years (Exodus 7:7), born in Year 2365 AM prior to Pharaoh’s decree of male infanticide. Appointed by Yahuah as Mosheh’s official spokesman and prophet (Exodus 4:14–16; 7:1), Aharon wielded the miraculous rod that swallowed the serpents of Egypt’s magicians, initiated the first three plagues, upheld Mosheh’s hands during the battle against Amalek, and was consecrated as the inaugural Kohen Gadol (High Priest) of the Tabernacle order.

His life embodies the profound tension between human frailty (the Golden Calf compromise) and heavenly redemption (standing with burning incense between the living and the dead to halt divine plague).

🏛️ Section I: Lineage, Family & Early Calling

1. Genealogy of the House of Levi

Aharon was the firstborn son of Amram (son of Kohath, son of Levi) and Jochebed (Exodus 6:18–20):

  • Wife: Elisheba (אֱלִישֶׁבַע — “My Elohim is an Oath”), daughter of Amminadab, sister of Nahshon the prince of the tribe of Judah (Exodus 6:23), welding the priestly house of Levi to the royal royal line of Judah.
  • Four Sons:
    1. Nadab (firstborn) — consumed by divine fire for offering strange fire (Leviticus 10:1–2).
    2. Abihu — consumed by divine fire alongside Nadab (Leviticus 10:1–2).
    3. Eleazar — inherited the High Priesthood upon Mount Hor; father of Phinehas (Numbers 20:25–28).
    4. Ithamar — supervised the construction of the Mishkan and duties of the Gershonites and Merarites (Exodus 38:21; Numbers 4:28).

2. The Battle of Rephidim (Exodus 17:8–13)

When Amalek attacked Israel in the desert, Mosheh stood on the hill overlooking the battlefield with the Rod of Elohim in his hand. When Mosheh’s hands grew heavy, Aharon and Hur placed a stone under him and supported his hands until sunset, securing total victory for Yahusha son of Nun. This established Aharon’s calling as the indispensable support to civil and prophetic leadership.

⚖️ Section II: The Golden Calf Crucible & Intercession (Exodus 32)

While Mosheh was engulfed in the cloud atop Mount Sinai for forty days receiving the stone tablets, the mixed multitude and fearful elders pressured Aharon: “Make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Mosheh, the man that brought us up out of the land of Mitsrayim, we wot not what is become of him” (Exodus 32:1).

  1. The Compromise: Aharon collected the golden earrings, melted them, and fashioned a molded bovine calf with an engraving tool.
  2. The Syncretistic Proclamation: He built an altar before it and declared: “Chag l’Yahuah machar” — “Tomorrow is a feast unto Yahuah!” (Exodus 32:5). Aharon attempted to redirect their Egyptian pagan impulse toward Yahuah, but produced catastrophic spiritual adultery instead.
  3. The Divine Fury & Mosheh’s Intercession: Yahuah was so angry with Aharon that He would have destroyed him entirely, had not Mosheh pleaded and interceded on his behalf (Deuteronomy 9:20). Aharon’s life was spared by sheer unmerited mercy, qualifying him to be a compassionate High Priest who could empathize with human weakness (Hebrews 5:1–2).

👑 Section III: Consecration as High Priest (Kohen Gadol)

Following the erection of the Mishkan (Year 2449 AM), Mosheh consecrated Aharon and his sons in an eight-day ordination ceremony (Leviticus 8–9):

The 8 Holy Garments of Aharon (Bigdei Kodesh)

Aharon was clothed in eight sacred vestments (Exodus 28), four worn by ordinary priests and four exclusive to the High Priest:

Garment #Hebrew NameEnglish DescriptionSpiritual & Courtroom Function

8Tzitz ZahavGolden Crown / PlatePure gold plate engraved: “QODESH L’YAHUAH” (Set-Apart to Yahuah) on the forehead to bear iniquity of holy things.

⚡ Section IV: The Two Great Wilderness Tests

1. Standing Between the Living and the Dead (Numbers 16:41–50)

Following the swallowing of Korah, the congregation murmured against Mosheh and Aharon, accusing them of killing the people of Yahuah. A deadly plague broke out immediately from the Divine Presence:

  • Mosheh shouted to Aharon: “Take a censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and put on incense, and go quickly unto the congregation, and make an atonement for them: for there is wrath gone out from Yahuah; the plague is begun!” (Numbers 16:46).
  • Aharon ran into the midst of the terrified assembly, put on the incense, and stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed (Numbers 16:48).
  • 14,700 Israelites died, but Aharon’s fearless intercession saved the entire nation.

2. The Miracle of Aaron’s Budding Rod (Numbers 17)

To definitively silence all tribal challenges regarding the legitimate priesthood:

  • Twelve wooden staffs—one for each tribe—were deposited overnight before the Ark of the Testimony.
  • The next morning, Aharon’s rod had supernaturally sprouted buds, bloomed blossoms, and produced ripe almonds (Numbers 17:8).
  • This rod was commanded to be placed inside the Ark of the Covenant as a permanent witness that true divine authority is confirmed by resurrection life, not democratic consensus or pedigree.

⛰️ Section V: Passing on Mount Hor (Numbers 20:22–29; 33:38–39)

In the fifth month of the fortieth year (Year 2488 AM), Israel encamped at Mount Hor on the border of Edom:

  • Because Aharon rebelled against Yahuah’s word at the waters of Meribah alongside Mosheh (Numbers 20:24), he was gathered unto his people without entering the Promised Land.
  • Mosheh, Aharon, and Aharon’s son Eleazar ascended Mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation.
  • Mosheh stripped Aharon of his holy High Priestly garments and placed them upon his son Eleazar (Numbers 20:26–28), officially transferring the high priestly succession.
  • Aharon died on the top of the mount at the age of 123 years (Numbers 33:39). All the house of Israel wept and mourned for him thirty days (Numbers 20:29).
